It communicates via RS232 to the M1XSLZW which translates the protocol into the M1 control. This allows commands to be sent and received on the Z-Wave network. Functionally the M1XSLZW is a serial expander (RS485 to RS232) and shares the same TYPE 5 databus ID as M1XSP serial expanders. Locks require a special Security Encrypted (SE) protocol and a process called \"Beaming\". Both the M1XSLZW and the VRC0P+3 support these new requirements. In general, any Z-Wave device that is compatible with the Leviton VRC0P+3 should also be compatible with the M1.
